How to Clean Copy-Pasted ChatGPT and Claude Output

By M Nouman Saeed · Published on September 16, 2026 · 6 min read

You ask ChatGPT or Claude for a paragraph, copy the response, and paste it into an email, a CMS, or a script — and suddenly there are stray asterisks, pound signs, and oddly curled quotation marks everywhere. This isn't a bug in the AI. It's the same formatting mismatch problem that happens with any copy-paste, just from a different source.

💡 Pro-Tip: Clean AI Output Before It Goes Anywhere Else

Paste the AI's response into our online text cleaner before pasting it into a CMS, code editor, or document — it strips Markdown artifacts, smart quotes, and stray whitespace in one click.

Why AI Output Looks Fine On Screen but Messy Elsewhere

Chat interfaces render Markdown for readability: **bold** becomes bold text, # Heading becomes a large header, - itembecomes a bullet point. What you see in the chat window is the rendered version. What actually gets copied to your clipboard is often the raw Markdown source underneath — which looks completely different once pasted into a plain-text field that doesn't render Markdown.

The Most Common Artifacts

  • Markdown syntax: Literal **, #, -, and ` characters left over from bold text, headers, bullet lists, and inline code formatting.
  • Smart quotes and em dashes:AI models tend to generate natural, typographically "correct" punctuation — curly quotes, em dashes — that breaks code snippets or JSON expecting plain ASCII characters.
  • Numbered list drift:Copying a numbered list from a chat interface sometimes carries extra indentation or duplicate numbering when pasted into a different editor's list format.
  • Invisible characters: Some chat UIs insert non-breaking spaces or other invisible Unicode characters as part of their internal rendering — the same category of issue covered in our zero-width space guide.

Where This Actually Breaks Things

Most of the time these artifacts are just visually annoying. But in a few specific contexts they cause real problems: pasting AI-generated code into a file (Markdown backticks can end up inside the actual code), pasting AI-written copy into a CMS that then double-renders the leftover Markdown symbols as literal text, or pasting AI-generated JSON or config values where a smart quote silently breaks parsing — the same class of JSON syntax errors we cover elsewhere, just introduced by an AI response instead of a hand-typed one.

The Fix

The same plain-text cleanup habit that works for pasting content into an AI prompt works just as well for cleaning its output back out — see our companion guide on cleaning text before pasting it into an AI prompt for the input side of this same problem. Run the AI's response through a text cleaner before it goes into its final destination, and the Markdown symbols, smart quotes, and invisible characters get stripped in one pass instead of hunting for them by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ChatGPT output have asterisks and pound signs when I paste it?

Those are Markdown syntax — **double asterisks** for bold and # for headers — that the chat interface renders as formatted text on screen but sends as raw literal characters when copied into a plain-text field, code editor, or app that doesn't interpret Markdown.

Why do AI responses have curly quotes instead of straight ones?

Models frequently generate 'smart' typographic quotes and em dashes as part of natural-sounding prose. These render fine in most text, but will break code snippets, JSON examples, or any context expecting plain ASCII quote characters.

Is it safe to paste AI output directly into code or a CMS?

Only after cleaning it. AI-generated text can carry Markdown artifacts, smart punctuation, and non-breaking spaces that look correct visually but cause parsing errors in code, malformed HTML in a CMS, or broken JSON in a config file.

Does this happen with every AI tool, or just ChatGPT?

It happens with any AI chat interface that renders Markdown for readability — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and most others included. The underlying response text contains the same raw Markdown syntax and typographic substitutions regardless of which model produced it.
